Call for Papers — Open Sessions
Health and Biosciences Libraries Section
- 31 January 2019, 16:59
Theme: "Health information professionals - Developing the dialogue, addressing the challenges of the future"
** Deadline extended to 24 March 2019 **
Of the many threads that run through IFLA’s emerging Global Vision, “dialogue” and “connection” are arguably the most significant. The Global Vision encourages the international library community to better understand community needs around health and well being, advocate, develop a spirit of collaboration, and give young professionals the chance to lead. This approach requires all, especially young professionals, to look at their work in a much more integrated and holistic way, breaking down silo barriers and working across boundaries.
In order to meet the challenges of IFLA’s Global Vision, how do we need to grow as an international community of health and biosciences librarians? What emerging opportunities are there for collaboration? How do we engage with younger members of the profession and give them a voice? How can health and biosciences librarians embrace the ideas raised by the Global Vision to contribute to improved health and well being for all?
The IFLA Health and Biosciences Libraries (HBS) section wishes to engage in the broadest possible consideration of this theme, through lightning talks which explore dialogue, connection, innovative advocacy and new leadership within health sciences librarianship. We are especially interested in hearing the perspectives of new professionals within our specialty.
The Lightning Talk format allows presenters to articulate a topic, share an experience or present an argument in a quick, clear and insightful manner – for this session talks will be 5 minutes long. We look forward to a fast and thought provoking 1-hour session.
Subthemes
The following three subthemes are of particular interest to us, but contributions outside of these themes will also be considered.
Subtheme 1. Contributing to improved citizen health and wellbeing
This theme invites papers from all sectors of the profession, including academia, on breaking down silos and working across traditional boundaries. It may involve establishing new connections and networks or other innovative approaches.
Subtheme 2. Technology as a vector for communication
This theme invites innovative and practical ideas, especially ones that can be used in low tech settings, not just to share and promote reliable health information, but to encourage individuals to take responsibility for their own health, and as well, that of their families and local communities.
Subtheme 3. Equipping our future workforce
This theme invites papers on how health librarianship is preparing librarians for a multifaceted and rapidly changing future; a future which will require a range of transferable soft skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence.
Papers are especially invited from students at undergraduate and postgraduate level reflecting on how their training is equipping them (or not) for a changing future and on how curricula might change to better enable them to learn transferable skills.
Submission Guidelines
Selected presenters will be required to prepare three slides, including a title slide, and will have five minutes in which to speak. Questions will follow each set of 4 lightning talks.
An abstract must be submitted in an electronic format, containing:
